PUR

PUR is a social enterprise and B Corp based in France with offices in 9 countries and projects in more than 30 countries. We are a company dedicated to supporting organizations who want to design and execute ecosystem restoration projects inside or outside of their supply chain, specifically working with Farmers to support them with the knowledge, seedlings/direct inputs, and support to help them restore their farmlands and the surrounding ecosystems. We work with companies like Nespresso, Mars, and General Mills to implement agroforestry, reforestation and regenerative agriculture projects that help strengthen their supply chains, improve and diversify farmer incomes, capture carbon, and improve biodiversity, watershed and soil health.

Our Commitments

PUR commits to plant 15,5M trees in the period 2021-2025 within coffee landscape and in connection with coffee farmers communities. PUR is specialized in the operation of large scale insetting programs by regenerating coffee landscapes and supply chains with the direct support of coffee roasters that depend on these landscapes and sourcing communities. Insetting reforestation programs create holistic benefits that allow for healthy ecosystems and resilient communities, and are an efficient strategy to achieve the Net Zero globally. PUR believes that insetting and restoration should happen at scale and is a strong advocate of partnerships for holistic and ambitious reforestation programs.

Considering past commitments and the 2025 target, the accrued value of PUR projects globally is expected to represent 20M trees planted by the end of 2025.

Update

July 2023

From January 2021 to December 2022, PUR in collaboration with its partners planted a total of 2.44M multipurpose trees with coffee producing communities in 9 countries (namely Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Uganda, Indonesia, China, Mexico, and Thailand). While the first ones are historical countries, PUR started new coffee operations in Mexico, Thailand and China in 2022. Over the course of 2022, additional feasibility studies were also conducted in several of the above listed countries to continue to explore additional tree planting potential opportunities as PUR intends to scale its efforts for the period 2023-2025 in line with its commitment for 2025. Some of the PUR projects are certified against a carbon standard (i.e. VCS) and several projects have gone through their first verification period in 2021 (as shared last year). Simultaneously, PUR is exploring a pilot with the Value Change Intervention Guidance (by SustainCert) for some of its coffee projects as the certification is well adapted to insetting projects and GHG Protocol reporting.

PUR Projet plants natives trees with its corporate partners in and around coffee parcels in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia. PUR Projet also commits to the near-term development of a smallholder impact investment model, focused on the installation of coffee under agroforestry and intercropping on degraded lands. The goal of these programs is to combat deforestation, enhance ecosystem services, provide additional income for coffee Farmers and provide climate change mitigation and adaption. Since 2010, PUR Projet has planted roughly 1.5 mln trees and commits to planting an additional 1.5 mln trees by 2020, and 3 mln by 2025. By 2025 PUR Projet will have planted trees with roughly 12,000 smallholder Farmers in total, an addition of 8,000 Farmers. PUR Projet believes that supporting a healthy ecosystem at the landscape level is the key to the future of sustainable coffee, and is fundamental if we are to achieve a truly deforestation free commodity.

Update

July 2022

By the end of 2020, PUR Projet along with its roasters partners [including Nestlé Nespresso, Louis Dreyfus Foundation, Alter Eco] has planted 4,4M trees in a variety of coffee landscapes to support climate resiliency and producing communities around the world. The planting has supported roughly 15,000 farmers in Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Uganda and Indonesia.

In 2021, 3 of the countries mentionned above were audited against a carbon standard, i.e. Reforestation Solidaire or VCS, that allowed to check on the carbon sequestration performance achieved to date. They show that a cumulative sequestration of 95,000 tCO2e by the end of 2020 thanks to the reforestation efforts in these 3 countries.

PUR Projet will be continuing its efforts towards coffee agroforestry and landscape restoration by re-stating an increased commitment for 2025.
