CARICO Café will work with and encourage smallholding farmers to develop / return to agro-forestry practices using enhanced ecological farming methods within indigenous tree species. This will involve a programme to educate coffee farmers, cooperatives and communities on reforestation and we will plant recommended, correctly sourced indigenous trees on coffee smallholdings in Bugisu at over 1900 metres altitude. This will start restoration of the necessary tree coverage; increase biodiversity; rebuild an optimal agro-forestry ecosystem; enhance soil nutrients and reduce soil and land erosion. The zones we primarily work in border, or are close to, a UNESCO globally-registered biosphere zone. CARICO Café commits to support farmers to maintain and rejuvenate smallholdings through field visits, agronomist advice and vital inputs needed for both growth and processing to maintain harvest quality. In addition we will support access to financial and other expertise to enable holistic development.
